At 77 years old, Loretta Shaklee of Greeley found herself in a position she wasn’t quite used to. She needed help. And she needed it quick.
Shaklee’s husband died four years ago. Between trying to pay off his medical bills and her own bills, she lost their house. She moved into an apartment but the rent was raised, and she struggled to afford it along with her $400 monthly prescriptions and costly, weekly doctor visits for her heart condition. Someone mentioned to her that she should call Catholic Charities of Weld County. So, without knowing what to expect, she did.

Norma Trujillo struggled for years to leave her family’s home and strike out on her own, having to find the funds and means to live independently without the gift of sight.
But when the 32-year-old Greeley native started meeting with Greeley’s Connections for Independent Living in 2004, she said she finally had access to the resources that allowed her to live on her own — helping her pay her bills online and picking up food boxes from Weld Food Bank, for example.

The fifth annual El Pomar Foundation Northern Colorado Empty Stocking Fund kicks off today and runs through Saturday, December 31. Providing emergency support for everything from rental assistance for persons with disabilities to utility bill payments for families with children, donors have the power to make a difference and make an impact with a donation to the Northern Colorado Empty Stocking Fund (NCESF).
