Welcome back to the David Lee Roth interview show! Tonight’s guests include everybody’s favorite rock star duo of brotherly love. No, not Noel and Liam, it’s Eddie and Alex! Roth sits down with the Van Halen brothers for a little Q&A. Who better to dig under the surface for some historical Van Halen anecdotes than the ringleader himself?

After a quick lesson on what Starbucks and McDonalds are really selling from Alex, the conversation quickly shifts to record contracts, the language used in them, and general frustrations of ‘the biz.’ It’s all talked about pretty humorously, and a particularly funny story about their first accountant follows. The trio then starts dishing some good info on the hectic time they had getting their second record done, seeing as how they were given just three weeks to do so. It’s cool to see just how at ease and happy they are, just sitting and talking together.

A similarly entertaining conversation about the Van Halen brothers’ musical educations popped up on the band’s official site a few weeks back. With another ‘to be continued..” tag popping up at the end of this one, we can rest assured there will be more tales of past lives and general merriment to follow!

Man, those Journey guys keep getting into legal trouble! After the news last week about Neil Schon being served with a (seemingly dubious) 50 million dollar lawsuit brought by his new girlfriend’s estranged husband, now we hear that Journey drummer Deen Castronovo has agreed to complete 80 hours of community service as a result of an alleged assault case from about a month ago.

This stems from an incident last month when Castronovo was arrested after a neighbor called the police to report a man and woman fighting. The couple in question turned out to be Castrovono and an ex-girlfriend. After the incident, the Journey sticksman was charged with reckless endangerment, second-degree criminal mischief, harassment and interfering with making a police report.

On Jan. 31, he pled not guilty to the four charges, all of which are misdemeanors, in Polk County Circuit Court. In addition to the community service, he is also required to attend anger management classes as part of a diversion agreement. That wheel in the sky, sure does keep on turning doesn’t it?!

After more than 2 hours, the blond highlights look good, and the orange is gone, and most of the length is gone. I finally went to a salon, paid $156 plus tip, and feel healthy

The wind is reeking havoc in the Colorado Mountains and all along the Front Range. A High Wind Warning is in effect until tomorrow morning. Highway 287 and Highway 85 were both closed last night, but have since been re-opened. I-25 from the Wyoming border to Cheyenne is restricted for high-profile vehicles or light trailers this morning. I-25 North of Cheyenne is closed due to winter conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, the High Wind Warning remains in effect until 5 a.m. Thursday. These are the areas that are affected by the Warning:

• Larimer County below 6000 feet
• Northwest Weld County
• Boulder and Jefferson Counties below 6000 feet
• West Broomfield County
• Including the cities of…Fort Collins, Hereford, Loveland, Nunn, Arvada, Boulder, Golden, Lakewood, Longmont

Periods of strong gusty winds will occur today and tonight. The strongest winds are expected to occur from later this morning into the early evening hours. Winds will then decrease late tonight as a cold front pushes across the area.

Wind gusts between 70 and 80 mph. The strong winds will be found close to the base of the foothills with lighter winds farther east toward I-25.

Strong winds will produce hazardous driving conditions for high profile vehicles near the base of the foothills…Especially along highway 93 between golden and boulder…U.S. 36between Broomfield and Lyons…As well as highway 287 from Broomfield through Fort Collins.

Precautionary/preparedness actions…

• Remember…A high wind warning means that strong and potentially damaging winds are either occurring or highly likely. Travel in high profile vehicles is discouraged.

• Residents in the warning area are urged to bring indoors any loose items such as garbage cans and patio furniture that may be blown about by the strong winds.

An article about Tim Tebow in the latest edition of GQ magazine has some surprising quotes from the Broncos quarterback’s backup Brady Quinn. Although Quinn has since called Tebow and apologized, and fired back at the magazine saying the quotes were taken out of context, the free agent quarterback may have just written his way out of Denver.

In the article, entitled The Year of Magical Stinking: An Oral History of Tebow Time, Quinn told the reporter, “There’s a lot of things that just don’t seem very humble to me. When I get that opportunity, I’ll continue to lead not necessarily by trying to get in front of the camera and praying but by praying with my teammates, you know?” Quinn also went on to gripe about Tebow getting the job after former starter Kyle Orton was benched saying “I felt like the fans had a lot to do with that. Just ’cause they were chanting his name. There was a big calling for him,” Quinn said. “No, I didn’t have any billboards. That would have been nice.” Most of the article bashes Tebow and the accomplishments of the Broncos led by Tebow with Quinn seeming to agree saying “We’ve had a lot of, I guess, luck, to put it simply.”

“The comments attributed to me in a recent magazine article are in NO WAY reflective of my opinion of Tim and the Broncos. Tim deserves a lot of credit for our success and I’m happy for him and what he accomplished. Most importantly, he is a great teammate. That interview was conducted three months ago, and the resulting story was a completely inaccurate portrayal of my comments. I have addressed my disappointment with the writer and have reached out to Tim to clear this up. I apologize to anyone who feels I was trying to take anything away from our Team’s or Tim’s success this season,” Quinn tweeted.

Today is Ash Wednesday which means it is exactly 40 days until Easter, and also a period of time referred to by Christians as Lent. The traditional purpose of Lent is the penitential preparation of the believer—through prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving, and self-denial. The main change comes as many of the faithful commit to fasting or giving up certain types of luxury as a form of penitence.  Do you observe Lent? If so, what are you giving up? 

Although not observed by all practicing Christians, Lent has become more popular in Western culture over recent years. This event, along with its pious customs are observed by Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, Anglicans and some Baptists. Lent is increasingly being observed by other denominations as well, even such groups that have historically ignored Lent, such as some Baptists and Mennonites.

According to the Synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus spent forty days fasting in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry, where he endured temptation by Satan. Because of the struggled endured, it became tradition to give up meat for Lent, and many still do. But, it is not required that a Christian give up meat, and many choose other luxuries to sacrifice for Lent today.

Fans from all walks of life are gearing up for Lynyrd Skynyrd‘s sixth annual Simple Man Cruise, which will set sale over the Halloween weekend.

Like all the band’s previous cruises, the 2012 lineup will leave fans anxiously awaiting the next cruise and the one after that. Joining the legendary rockers for this year’s cruise will be The Doobie Brothers, The Outlaws and Blackberry Smoke, as well as over fifteen other national and regional Southern rock bands that will be announced in the coming weeks.

As previously reported, the cruise aboard the Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pearl ship will set sale from Miami, Fla., and make stops in Key West and Great Stirrup Cay on Oct. 27, concluding on Halloween (Oct. 31). In addition to the amazing musical lineup and various shows on the ship, cruise-goers will also have the enjoyment of the all-inclusive meals, access to two pools on board, hot tubs, massive spa, rock climbing wall and a full fitness center.

Over the last decade and change, the annual Concerts for Teenage Cancer Trust have become a London tradition — and this year, they’ll celebrate their 12th anniversary with an impressive run of shows that will kick off with a Paul McCartney performance on March 29.

McCartney will take the stage at the Royal Albert Hall for his show, which leads a string of six benefit concerts concluding on April 3. The series continues the next night with Example, followed by Pulp in March 31, Jessie J on April 1, a comedy evening on April 2 and Florence + the Machine on April 3. Tickets go on sale this Friday (Feb. 24).

Founded in 1997, the Teenage Cancer Trust has raised more than $50 million for building hospital units specifically designed for teenage patients who have been diagnosed with cancer, leukaemia, Hodgkin’s and related diseases. Previous participants in the concert series, which have enjoyed support from Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of the Who, include Ronnie Wood, Noel Gallagher, the Specials, Depeche Mode, and Chris Martin of Coldplay.

“‘I’m doing this in honor of the late Whitney Houston. It’s very hard to think of her being gone,” Harr says at the beginning of the video. Then she launches into an energetic dance to Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)’ that totally defies her ripe age.

What makes the video even more impressive is that Harr is legally blind and suffers from moderate hearing loss. Still, she shows no signs of slowing down as she busts a move to Houston’s ’80s gem.

I’ve attended Spring Fling in the past to show in halter and western pleasure. It’s always a treat to ride and play ‘ponies’ inside in March!

We don’t know much about the details, but there have been reports that Google is developing a car that drives itself, guided by computers, GPS and a whole bunch of sensors. A computer-driven Prius has been spotted around Northern California.

Most of us know what Mardi Gras has become, but some including myself, don’t know always understand what Mardi Gras is actually about. Sure, we know it’s the last day before Lent, and that means party time in New Orleans, but Mardi Gras really is a lot more than the rowdy, happy and crazy celebration that vendors, club owners, and others have hijacked and turned  from the quite day of feasting at home, to the parade going, beer guzzling, breast flashing party you sometimes see and hear about.

Not that any of the aforementioned activities are necessarily bad, I just feel that if we are going to celebrate something that it is important to know what we are celebrating.

HISTORY

The words, “Mardi Gras” in French are translated, “Mardi”, French for “Tuesday” and “Gras”, in French, means “Fat”. In translating French to English, the last word spoken should be the first word translated. Therefore following this loose rule, the translation comes to mean, “Fat Tuesday”.

In the Middle Ages, the Catholic church prescribed what was on the daily menu. Each week during the Lenten season, there was at least one day, and more often three or even four days (depending on where and when in medieval Europe, you were) during which no meat was to be eaten. For centuries, it was customary to fast by abstaining from meat with the lone exception of fish, during Lent

In those days, long ago, people, of course, had no refrigeration, to hold perishable foods for long periods of time. Lenten season, requiring the observer to refrain from meat, presented some interesting problems for keeping and storing foods. Since the Lenten season is about 40 days long, in duration, meat on hand, had to either, be eaten, before the start of the observance or discarded.

Since Lent always starts on the seventh Wednesday before Easter, the religious following of Jesus, would choose the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday to feast, before beginning the season of “fasting”. This way they could take care of two problems; the first, the hunger that goes along with fasting. The second, how to get rid of all that food before it spoiled, because they basically had a meatless and sometimes a very slim diet, for the next month. The French began to refer too this day as, “Fat Tuesday” or, as spoken in French, “Mardi Gras”.

Mardi Gras in the United States

Many historians believe that the first American Mardi Gras took place on March 3, 1699, when the French explorers Iberville and Bienville landed in what is now Louisiana, just south of the holiday’s future epicenter: New Orleans. They held a small celebration and dubbed the spot Point du Mardi Gras. In the decades that followed, New Orleans and other French settlements began marking the holiday with street parties, masked balls and lavish dinners. When the Spanish took control of New Orleans, however, they abolished these rowdy rituals, and the bans remained in force until Louisiana became a U.S. state in 1812.

On Mardi Gras in 1827, a group of students donned colorful costumes and danced through the streets of New Orleans, emulating the revelry they’d observed while visiting Paris. Ten years later, the first recorded New Orleans Mardi Gras parade took place, a tradition that continues to this day. In 1857, a secret society of New Orleans businessmen called the Mistick Krewe of Comus organized a torch-lit Mardi Gras procession with marching bands and rolling floats, setting the tone for future public celebrations in the city. Since then, krewes have remained a fixture of the Carnival scene throughout Louisiana. Other lasting customs include throwing beads and other trinkets, wearing masks, decorating floats and eating King Cake.

Louisiana is the only state in which Mardi Gras is a legal holiday. However, elaborate carnival festivities draw crowds in other parts of the United States during the Mardi Gras season as well, including Alabama and Mississippi. Each region has its own events and traditions.

Mardi Gras Around the World

Across the globe, pre-Lenten festivals continue to take place in many countries with significant Roman Catholic populations. Brazil’s weeklong Carnival festivities feature a vibrant amalgam of European, African and native traditions. In Canada, Quebec City hosts the giant Quebec Winter Carnival. In Italy, tourists flock to Venice’s Carnevale, which dates back to the 13th century and is famous for its masquerade balls. Known as Karneval, Fastnacht or Fasching, the German celebration includes parades, costume balls and a tradition that empowers women to cut off men’s ties. For Denmark’s Fastevlan, children dress up and gather candy in a similar manner to Halloween–although the parallel ends when they ritually flog their parents on Easter Sunday morning.

It’s become a very controversial issue in a very short time. Should CSU build a new on campus stadium and if so, where? There are supporters of a new stadium and there supporters of keeping Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium. Colorado State has announced series of 10 public forums to collect input regarding the proposed on-campus stadium. Registration is required!

CSU President Tony Frank has created a Stadium Advisory Committee, chaired by Vice President for University Operations Amy Parsons and Athletic Director Jack Graham, which held its first meeting February 3rd . The committee must prepare a report by the end of the semester on whether the university should pursue an on-campus stadium, as well as specifics about where it could be built and how it would be funded.

According to a press release from Colorado State University: Dr. Frank said any recommendations on a stadium must fall within the following parameters:

• CSU won’t consider putting the stadium on existing open green space, including the intramural fields.

• CSU won’t consider putting the stadium in front of significant existing view sheds so as to protect views of the mountains.

• All recommendations from the Advisory Committee must take into serious account any impact on neighbors in areas adjacent or near a new stadium.

• State appropriation, tuition, fees or taxes will not be considered as funding sources for a stadium project.

Fat Tuesday is your last hurrah, folks, so let the carbo loading begin. Fat Tuesday will give way to a more solemn occasion, Ash Wednesday, and then a 40-day period of self-sacrifice known as Lent. For Catholics and other Christians, Ash Wednesday symbolizes the start of the 40 days Jesus spent praying and fasting in the desert, resisting temptation, before his crucifixion. So that means for those that stick with tradition today, Fat Tuesday is the last chance to do something you love, and wont be doing again until Easter. Do you go nuts? 

Fat Tuesday, the English translation of the French “Mardi Gras,” signals the official end of Carnival season, billed as a hedonistic frenzy of food, booze, parades, masked celebrations and things that can’t be printed in a family newspaper.

Fat Tuesday is kind of like a hangover helper — and a way to get ready for what lies ahead.

The day is marked by one final food frenzy, much of it revolving around carbohydrates such as pancakes and deep-fried delights such as doughnuts. Why? Some say the tradition dates back to a time when refrigeration was non-existent and all the goodies in the home had to be eaten because they wouldn’t survive Lent. (They would probably also be an unnecessary temptation.)

The food frenzy also offers a final opportunity to indulge in rich, fatty favorites before Ash Wednesday and Lent.

On Ash Wednesday, many Christians wear a cross on their foreheads made of ashes, a sign that the bearer is in the process of renewing and rededicating his or her faith, according to American Catholic’s online site.

Over the last 20 years, Kirk Orndoff of Loveland and his son W. Kirk Orndoff have recorded trains in and around Loveland. Their photographs will be on display at the Loveland Museum/Gallery, with a special opening ceremony this Saturday afternoon.

An exhibit showing 16 of their photographs that illustrate history as it happened will open at 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Loveland Museum/Gallery. The reception will be 2-4 p.m. and the exhibit will run through April 15.

Can you feel that? Oh no, wait, it’s more than a feeling. Yes, that’s right — while work on its long-delayed sixth studio album continues, Boston is returning to the road for a summer tour. As frontman Tom Scholz joked in his announcement to fans, this latest run of dates comes just in time for the end of the world.

“Just 10 months till the end … at least till the end of the Mayan calendar, anyway,” quipped Scholz. “I wonder, did they mean to prophesize the end of the world, or was the December 21st planetary alignment just a convenient place to stop chiseling stone tablets on a really long calendar project? Some people think it is the same thing, so why take a chance? If I was making a bucket list, it would definitely include going out one more time to play some Boston shows — before time runs out!”

For Scholz, who has led the band through countless lineup changes and lawsuits over the years, it’s all about the fans. “I don’t really think the world is going to end this year,” he explained, “but on the off chance the Mayans were on to something, let me take a moment to thank all of you for helping make the Boston experience an awesome ride. One of the best things about Boston to me is its fans; they are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met, and collectively the best crowds anyone could wish to play for.”

Boston’s 2012 lineup includes longtime rhythm and lead guitarist Gary Pihl, bass player Kimberly Dahme and drummer Jeff Neal, who both boast roughly a decade in the band, and singer/keyboard player/percussionist Tommy DeCarlo, who took full responsibility for lead vocals when Stryper’s Michael Sweet ended his three-year association with Boston in 2011. The faces may change, but the hits stay the same — will you be in the audience for any of Boston’s 2012 tour stops?
